About the book

This book is the second of a two-volume set on basic organic chemistry. Although it primarily follows the +2 syllabus, it should be useful as an introductory course for undergraduates and for those preparing for different competitive examinations. This book begins with the synthesis and applications of various useful organic polymers along with their classification and mechanism of polymerization. Then it moves on the chemistry of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids. Important biomolecules such as hormones, enzymes, vitamins and lipids are described in details along with their structures and roles in the biological system. Organic molecules useful in our everyday life in the form of medicines, food additives, food preservatives, detergents and dyes are also discussed. Each chapter has extensive exercises with answers and hints. The book also has a chapter that deals with the different types of questions asked in competitive examinations.

Features

  • The book takes a bottom-up approach to the study of organic chemistry. The subject matter has been developed in a logical sequence. The language is simple, and readers should not find it difficult to understand the text.
  • The first chapter presents the concepts of polymers and polymerisation and deals with different types of organic polymers and mechanism of their formation. The major focus is on synthetic polymers, including biodegradable polymers and their applications.
  • The chemistry of carbohydrates deal with the occurrence, structure elucidation and biological functions of carbohydrates. The stereochemical aspects such as configurations and conformations, and their influence on biological properties have been explained.
  • Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures of proteins have been discussed in detail. Various biological functions of proteins in the form of hormones, enzymes, oxygen-transport molecules and structural material, etc. have been explained.
  • The chapter on vitamins covers their occurrence, isolation and deficiency diseases.
  • The structures of RNA, and DNA and their role in biological systems have been explained clearly with the help of neat diagrams.
  • The chemistry of lipids, an important class of biomolecules, has also been included.
  • Also included is a brief account of the chemicals useful as medicines, food additives, preservatives, detergents and dyes.
  • At the end of chapter extensive exercises with answers and hints have been given. Apart from this, various types of questions asked in competitive examinations have been given as a separate chapter at the end of the book.
