About the book
This book is the first of a two-volume set on basic organic chemistry. Although it primarily follows the +2 syllabus, it should be useful as an introductory course for undergraduates and for those preparing for various entrance examinations. It introduces the concepts of structure and bonding, and then goes on to discuss reactions and reaction mechanisms. With the basic concepts in place, the focus shifts to structural theories, the principles of stereochemistry, and so on. The book adopts the traditional functional-group approach in dealing with the chemistry of aliphatic and aromatic compounds. This will help readers understand easily the chemistry of different classes of compounds. The chapters in the book include solved problems followed by extensive exercises with answers and hints. The book also has a chapter on the types of questions asked in competitive examinations.
Features
- The book takes a bottom-up approach to the study of organic chemistry.
- The subject matter has been developed in a logical sequence.
- The language is simple, and readers should not find it difficult to understand the text.
- The first few chapters focus on developing a sound understanding of the basic principles and techniques of organic chemistry such as purification, elemental analysis, empirical, molecular and structural formulae, classification, nomenclature, chemical bonding, structural theory, constitutional isomerism, stereoisomerism and reaction mechanisms.
- Then the follow chapters in which the chemistry of different classes of aliphatic and aromatic organic compounds has been discussed individually, furnishing definitions, classification, nomenclature, isomerism, preparations, physical properties, reactions and applications.
- Almost all important reactions have been explained with the help of reaction mechanisms. Chemoselectivity, regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of the reactions, where necessary, have been illustrated with suitable examples and explained with proper reasoning.
- Concepts of acids and bases, and relative acidity and basicity of different compounds have been discussed thoroughly at various places throughout the text.
- Almost all chapters have solved problems that illustrate the use of the concepts learnt in solving problems.
- At the end of chapter extensive exercises with answers and hints have been given. Apart from this, the last chapter of the book has been devoted to various types of questions asked in competitive examinations.
