Raman is so audacious he makes fun of the fearsome goddess, Kali. Annoyed with Raman’s impudence, the king orders his head to be cut off. But Raman has no intention of dying just yet. Indian folk-lore is filled with figures of wit – Birbal in North India, Tenali Raman in the South, and Gopal in Bengal. They are enormously popular, for their wisdom as much as for their jokes. These court jesters often took on the king to defend poor and weak people, and used humour to ensure justice.
