When a king is asked to measure the length and breadth of the earth, he turns to Gopal, the court jester. Indian folk-lore is filled with figures of wit &#8211; Birbal in North India, Tenali Raman in the South, and Gopal in Bengal. They are enormously popular, for their wisdom as much as for their jokes.
